Watch: Cults live/interview at SXSW. Playing June 16th Ninth Ward @BabevilleNY.

For a band that has worked hard to remain shrouded in mystery, Cults certainly know how to draw a crowd. Fans flocked to the Hill Stage at the French Legation Museum on Friday to hear tracks off the band’s forthcoming debut album; they were signed to Columbia on the strength of a handful of tracks that exploded on the web last year, and SXSW was buzzing for a chance to see in person what all the fuss was about. With locks flowing and boots stomping, Cults brought their woozy psych-pop and East Village rock and roll style to Texas, and proved that they are more than just hype.”

Pitchfork.com declared, “There’s more information on the wrapper of a candy bar than there is on the Internet about Cults.” The band’s website is mysteriously vague. Their bandcamp site lists tour dates and three tracks. With a bit more digging, it’s unearthed that Cults consist of a pair of Californian film students transplanted to New York, named Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin.

Swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, insistent drum throbs and Jana Hunter’s redolent, charred voice are the core components of Baltimore’s Lower Dens. Hunter, known for her intimate, ghost-heavy freak folk albums, has played with Matt & Mossy, Phosphorescent, CocoRosie, and Devendra Banhart, who signed Hunter to his Gnomonsong Records (run by Banhart and Vetiver’s Andy Cabic).
